Northwestern State University’s KNWD has a variety of programming this semester for your listening pleasure. The student-run radio station is currently based in Kyser Hall, room 109. It runs 24 hours a day targeting the audience in the Natchitoches community and the students at NSU.

Students working at the radio station will get a chance to learn valuable skills like radio management, on-air hosting, and radio production.

“Last semester we had a pretty decent number of shows, but this semester we don’t have as much,” DJ Coordinator Kiara Lafitte said. The demand for new shows is going up as most of the current hosts are graduating seniors.

“I am looking for new DJs to do new shows,” Lafitte said. She currently has one new DJ but she is looking to fill more spots.

Some of the new shows on KNWD this semester are:

“Sportsketball Therapy,” a sports show about everything sports related. It is hosted by Cole Brumbelow on Mondays at 6 p.m.

“Sports with Ron at the Crack of Dawn,” hosted by Leron Massey, is also a sports show, with the time still to be determined. Massey will also have guests to interview about sports as well.

“Papa and the Chief,” a show where the main focus is on world events and current affairs. They discuss relevant political and international happenings, as well as local news. It is hosted by Jacob Bennett and Anson Ballow on Wednesdays at 9 a.m.

“The VanYeaux,” a show about student life and the different activities you can do throughout the week. It is hosted by Yonna Pash and Vanner Erikson on Thursdays at noon.

A 30-minute show hosted by the news reporters at KNWD about current events and related content takes place on Fridays at 1:30 p.m.

There are also some returning shows at KNWD this semester. T&B with the Tea airs on Fridays at 12 p.m. Co-host Brandi Corkern decided to try hosting with her best friend Taylor Young and now they are glad they did.

“We both absolutely love it and we are looking forward to extending it to a podcast when we leave NSU,” Corkern said.

Musician Dany Recero hosts “TheMixShow.” The name comes from the fusion of musical genres like salsa, Merengue, and Champeta, said the KNWD has helped him in a “very important and big way.”

Recero says the radio station has opened his musical borders and allowed many important people are getting to know him. “Thanks to KNWD I had the opportunity to meet the person who is now my music manager.”

Scholarships are available for some positions, and one scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming freshman. Any student can apply to work without pay at the station.

“If you want to be a news reporter for KNWD or if you want to host your own DJ show, I suggest you fill out an application on Orgsync now,” Lafitte said.
