While the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame houses one of the more niche interests of Natchitoches, the museum hosts a wide variety of exhibits.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is one of the more contemporary places to admire the history of Natchitoches and Louisiana as a whole. Athletes and sports contributors are immortalized and remembered within the building.
While the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame houses one of the more niche interests of Natchitoches, the museum hosts a wide variety of exhibits.

A combination of two previous museums, the Old Courthouse Museum and the former Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the new Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, located in the Historic District of Natchitoches has become an unspoken beauty within most social circles of Natchitoches.

The museum itself is a beautiful, contemporarily designed building, along with the vast amounts of history, art and knowledge tucked inside.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame was accepted into the Louisiana museum system in 2003. Between the closing of the former museum and the opening of the current Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2013, the exhibits were housed on the Northwestern State University of Louisiana campus, in Prather Coliseum.

The modern museum, right in the forefront of Front Street and across from the Cane River, is admirable both for its contents and architectural design.

From interactive media and memorabilia to recordings and a comprehensive list of Louisiana, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame has exhibits for every sports fan. Sports exhibited include cross country, competitive fishing, football, baseball and a menagerie of others.

The museum was founded in 1958, and inductions began the same year. The tradition continues once every year, with a class of inductees being recognized and awarded for their impressive work, whether they happen to work on or off the field.

Now having honored over four hundred and fifty athletes, coaches, journalists and many others, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is also famous for housing artifacts donated by different exemplary inductees. Artifacts include, but certainly aren’t limited to, signed memorabilia, uniforms, trophies and iconic cars.

The Louisiana State Museum website gives insight into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the different, beautiful moments that are captured within.

“The Hall of Fame’s exhibits and interactive media trace the history of Louisiana sports and highlight the importance of sports to life in Louisiana. High-definition videos capture in-game drama and excitement, and touch-screens reveal sports stars’ life stories, career stats and colorful quotes,” the Louisiana State Museum website states.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame had to postpone their 2021 induction due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but the event was eventually able to safely take place, only a few months behind schedule. Candidates were and will be immortalized within the walls of the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

Having announced the class of 2022, set to be inducted on June 25, 2022, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame will invite each member to be recognized and awarded. This new class will mark the 63rd year of the longstanding tradition of inducting well-deserving, exemplary individuals.

With two floors of sports history that anyone could appreciate, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is another gem of Natchitoches, hiding right in plain sight.
