There’s something about Something About Saturdays
A new band has made its way to campus and has been making big moves this year.
The band consists of three Northwestern State University of Louisiana students who are showing their love and passion for music and sharing it with their fellow students.
Derek Walle, a senior biology major; Brooke Jones, a sophomore music performance major; and DQ Beasley, a sophomore music business major; are the three students who make up Something About Saturdays.
“DQ and I were hanging out one night and started to jam out, and DQ told me that their friend Brooke sings, can she jam with us, and I was like yeah sure. So we jammed a couple of times then decided we might as well play for something and just start a band,” Walle said.
They had never sought to start a band, they just knew that they were having fun and from there they turned into one.
Their band name fell into their lap by accident after trying to decide on what exactly they should name their band.
“We were here at work trying to figure out our band name and almost went with the name Moon Stone, until we heard a customer say I don’t know its just something about Saturdays, and from there it has been that,” Jones said.
The band is working on creating their own sound while also pulling inspiration from other bands that they like as well such as Snail Mail, Beach Bunny and Willow.
“We were trying to figure out what kind of sound we were going for so we decided to make a playlist and all add songs that we liked and that’s how we started to see what kind of vibe we were going for,” Jones said.
Their first original song “Brains R Weird” debuted at the Sorta Gras event hosted by local record store Laughing Sam’s Disc on Feb. 18, 2023. Since then the band has been doing more gigs in front of Laughing Sam’s and even had the opportunity of performing at Battle of the Bands, here at NSU.
Though Walle is in his last semester, he still has hopes that he and the band will still be in contact and have the opportunity to create music together.
“In a perfect world I would love to find a bigger city and play at venues and settle in a specific area to continue to play,” Walle said.
But that isn’t something that they want to stop them. Something About Saturdays plan on continuing together for the time they have left.
“If we do make it big it would be awesome to continue to play together, but I do plan on attending grad school, and I know that we all three do plan on moving when we graduate, and even if we don’t continue this will always be something that is apart of my life,” Jones said.
