Northwestern State University of Louisiana’s Demon Football team played in their first home game of the season this past weekend.
Unfortunately, the demons failed to pull through, losing 41-7 to Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks in the home-opener. Within the first quarter, the Lumberjacks got up to a 21-0 lead on the Demons.
With the offense not being able to put a drive together and even fumbling the ball on their first drive, they had a punt kick fumble leading to a defensive touchdown.
The defense were able to stall the Lumberjacks offense and have three straight drives while even blocking a field goal in the second quarter. Late in the quarter, they scored a touchdown on a run.
With the score 34-0 at the halfway mark, the Demons’ defense turned up the heat, only allowing one touchdown in the second half, and in the third quarter, a pass. The Demons’ defense got a turnover off an interception.
However, the Demons lost the turnover margin 6-1, having broken the record for most turnovers since last year, against University of Montana Grizzlies, finishing the game with a minus 5 turnover margin.
The Demons starting quarterback Tyler Vander Waal exited the game due to injury and Quaterius Hawkins took over for the Demons with him and Jaren Mitchell scoring the Demons only touchdown in the fourth quarter.
“Everybody got to look in the mirror and make sure everybody is doing their job. Well make sure those who are going to stay doing their job will be with us moving forward,” Brad Laird, football head coach, said.
The Demons have a bye week and look to clear their heads until Sept. 30 for their next home game against Eastern Illinois Panthers, in order to finish a two-game homestand.
