The Orville Hanchey Gallery will be hosting graduate student Derek Sarvis’ debut exhibition “Impressed.” In this exhibition, the artist presents a series of new works that explore the genre of landscape by combining impressionistic sensibilities with elements of mid-century color field painting. In viewing these works, the audience is encouraged to identify the underlying patterns and rhythms that serve as the building blocks for the world around us.
“In creating these works, I discovered a real love for the genre of landscape painting and the elements of storytelling contained within it. But when sharing the story of a landscape, the ownness falls on the artist to do more than recreate a stagnant image, they must prove they understand the underlying visual rhythms and impressive nature of the world around them,” Sarvis said.
The opening reception will be on Monday, April 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Hanchey Gallery, a space used by the Department of Fine and Graphic Arts to host events and exhibitions for student, faculty and visiting artists. The exhibition will run from April 7 to April 18.
