Throughout the year, Demon Heat Color Guard can be seen in their purple and white uniforms during sporting events, parades and other events around Northwestern State University. The team performs blends of contemporary and classic music to encourage school spirit and help engage their NSU peers in supporting their university. Members grow their leadership skills as well as their physical endurance while performing, and many members are proud to participate in the Color Guard every year.
Avary Stutzman, a junior biology major, has been with the Demon Heat Color Guard for three years and decided to join after they performed at her high school in 2021. “My favorite part of being part of the Color Guard is being surrounded by talented and supporting people who are all passionate about what we do,” Stutzman said.
Brady Mathis is a senior hospitality management and tourism major who has been a part of the Demon Heat Color Guard for four years and joined because he had previous experience in a band. “My favorite thing about the Color Guard is being able to be my authentic self while doing something that I love,” Mathis said. “Another thing I love about being in this sport is performing new shows every year to the school and showcasing all the talent that we have on our team!”
With each performance and flag twirl, the Demon Heat Color Guard brings students together by instilling pride in NSU’s sports. The Color Guard may be one of many organizations on campus dedicated to skilled feats on the football field during halftime or the stage of A.A. Fredericks Fine Arts Center, but their unique gravity-defying flag throwing and rhythmic dancing truly captivates all who watch.
