Northwestern State University’s Spirit of Northwestern (SON) marching band includes the school’s marching band, Demon Heat Colorguard and Demon Dazzlers. The band is active for both fall and spring semesters and allows students to continue their love for music at a collegiate level. They meet throughout the week to refine their skills, build bonds and bring pride to NSU.
Abby Harris is a sophomore music business major who has been marching since 2019. Harris started marching as a clarinetist in middle school but always admired the color guard, so when high school began, she made the switch. “I am so thankful that I came here because the Spirit of Northwestern has allowed me to break out of my shell and feel comfortable away from home,” Harris said.
Jonathan Stewart is a freshman computer information systems major who has played clarinet for six years. Stewart has had a great first year marching for NSU and commends the drum majors and band directors for their encouragement and involvement in the band. “They are all spectacular,” Stewart said.
Everyone who is a part of SON puts in countless hours of practice and they give their all during every performance. SON shows pride in NSU every time they step out on the field, eliciting school spirit from all who watch.
