The Lady Demons basketball team is an amazing group of women who love to play and share their passion for basketball. These women put their heart and soul into the game and make a point to show appreciation to their fans who support them after.
Mya Blake is a senior psychology major and point guard for the team who credits basketball for the reason she’s the leader she is today. “Being surrounded by talented and driven teammates has pushed me to become a better version of myself, both on and off the court. The experience has strengthened my leadership skills and taught me how to handle challenges with resilience,” Blake said.
The women do their very best to keep calm and remember what their coaches have taught them to bring out a win, helping them to better themselves as people. “They give me confidence and push me to be the very best me, which improves my experience on the court. Our coaches provide an incredible support system both on and off the court,” Blake said.
The women’s basketball team is coached by Anna Nims, who has been coaching for five years. “I tell every player in the recruiting process that I am very intense, tough and passionate. I will push them past what they ever imagined was possible, but I will cheer them on the entire way,” Nims said.
Vernell Atamah is a freshman nursing major who plays the position of forward on the team. “As I step onto the court, the feeling of excitement and determination begins to flow throughout my body. Naturally, I tend to overthink situations, so I fill my mind and thoughts with positivity and calmness to bring out my best,” Atamah said.
The women are expecting a great season for themselves, their fans and their supporters. “I’m excited to see how great our team can actually be,” Atamah said. “This season is definitely an opportunity to push past expectations and shock a lot of people.”
