The men’s track and field team at Northwestern State University is full of talented men who excel in many different events, such as relays, hurdles, javelin throws and shotput. This team competes every year against other schools in hopes of defeating them, and with a mix of veterans and new members, there is a lot of excitement for this season.
Mike Heimerman has been coaching NSU’s men’s track and field team for 28 years. “This is a good group of veterans and newcomers, of which both have had amazing training. There is a lot of excitement. All of these guys have improved a lot and I can’t wait to see how they do,” Heimerman said.
Galen Loyd is a senior physical education and health major who has been running track for eight years, four of them at NSU. His family has been involved in track and field as well, and Loyd was recruited in junior high. “The atmosphere of being in track and field is truly something else. There is so much support from my teammates and my coach,” Loyd said. He is looking forward to breaking the 400-meter dash record and winning the conference.
Evan Wilson is a senior business administration major who has been involved in track for seven years, half of that time with NSU. Wilson chose to run track at NSU to follow in the footsteps of his sister, who also competed at NSU. “The environment of the matches is truly incredible. The competition between ourselves and other teams really motivates me to do better,” Wilson said.
The men’s track and field team is constantly striving to better themselves, training throughout the year to push boundaries and break records.
