Northwestern State University offers a plethora of activities and organizations for all students, even those who want to play a sport in college without the pressures of being on a competitive team. Unlike NSU’s tennis team, which competes at a high level, the club tennis team is open to all regardless of experience. The club tennis team practices twice a week, focusing on having fun together while improving their skills and staying active.
Kevin Washington, a freshman communication major, loves the laid-back environment of club tennis that allows him to play in his free time. “I wanted to find a sport that was fun and not too serious, and club tennis was perfect. I didn’t have a ton of experience, but I liked the idea of being active and playing a sport without the pressure of competition,” Washington said.
Lia Portillo, a senior communication major, was also looking for a way to play sports at NSU without the competitive requirements of most sports. “I wanted a way to stay active and meet new people, and club tennis seemed like the perfect fit,” Portillo said. “I played in high school, but I didn’t want the commitment of a varsity team. This gives me the chance to keep playing without any pressure.”
Club tennis is a great way to meet new people and work together to improve towards your own goals, regardless of skill level. “The mix of experience levels makes it really cool. Some people played in high school, while others, like me, were total beginners. Everyone is super supportive, and it never feels intimidating. You just show up, play, and have fun,” Washington said.
The team offers many students the chance to get out of the classroom and make friends while having a great time and working at their own pace. “Everyone is friendly and supportive, and it’s a great way to take a break from classes. We joke around, help each other out and just enjoy the game. It’s more than just tennis, it’s a good social group too,” Portillo said.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re good or if you’ve never played before, everyone is welcome,” Portillo said. “It’s a great way to try something new, get some exercise and meet cool people. Plus, it’s low commitment, so you can just come out and have fun.”
Washington’s favorite thing about club tennis is the low-stress atmosphere and lack of pressure. “It’s not about winning or being the best, it’s about having a good time. We help each other out, joke around and just enjoy the game. It’s a great way to take a break from classes and do something active,” Washington said.
Club tennis at NSU is the perfect opportunity for students to get active and engage in sports without being overwhelmed by competitions or rigorous schedules. They can come together, play a game and have fun to forget the worries of stressful college life, and it’s one of the most beloved parts of the sport.
