One of Northwestern State University’s biggest events is sorority and fraternity recruitment, a fun and inviting time where NSU’s chapters host events to give students a chance to learn more about what each group has to offer. Rush Week can be the perfect chance for students to find their home away from home.
Kacy Young is a senior history and hospitality management and tourism double major and is the president of Tri Sigma. “In every sorority, there is a specific position whose job is to lead and prepare for recruitment,” Young said. “Each event is meticulously planned, from the speeches and the decorations to the food. Every sorority truly wants to showcase who they are, what they represent and the heart of their members.”
Once registered for recruitment, there are many opportunities for students to meet the sorority chapters. Each chapter holds two events leading up to formal recruitment rounds. After registration, the philanthropy and preference round starts. This is when it’s time to make big decisions about where students see themselves most. Lastly is Bid Day, when students enter their sisterhood.
Unlike sororities, fraternities hold a two-week open house in which everyone is welcome to view and get to know the different chapters. Students are then able to make their final decisions on Bid Day.
Mary-Katherine Horton Maggio is the director of first year experience and student engagement. “I encourage everyone to go through a recruitment process and explore your options. By getting involved in Greek life, you can meet some of your best friends,” Maggio said.
Every student has the opportunity to join Greek life. Katie Lynn Murray, a senior business administration major, is the director of philanthropy for Alpha Omicron Pi. “It’s not what you see on TV, but it is so awesome to see the tightness of our bond. It has made me so happy that I can just laugh with my sisters and cry with them. It’s really just something amazing,” Murray said.
Whether students want to get more involved on campus or meet new people, joining Greek life offers something for everyone. Students can find a place that feels like home, meet their best friend and make exciting memories that will last a lifetime.
