Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.—also known as AKA—is an African American sorority at Northwestern State University. The sorority has several initiatives to help chapters make lasting impacts on local communities, including Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice and Uplift Our Local Community. However, their main initiative is to “Strengthen our Sisterhood” as they work together to serve others.
Hannah Davis is a senior psychology major who enjoys helping the community around her. In high school, Davis discovered AKA’s mission to be of service to all mankind and was moved to join the sisterhood for life. “My favorite part is planning events, being out in the community and being able to help others,” Davis said.
This summer, AKA celebrated the graduation of a majority of their sisters, leaving Davis as the only active AKA member for part of the school year. Davis was able to host a variety of mental and physical health awareness talks with alumni guest speakers. “All of these programs are just making sure we’re having a local change, but also a big impact,” Davis said. “Everything we do is to the best of our effort.”
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. encourages all sisters to have strong values of family and community to strengthen not only each other but the people around them.
