Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was established at Indiana University on Jan. 5, 1911. The fraternity was previously called Kappa Alpha Nu in 1911, which has given the brothers the nickname of the “Nupes.” The Gamma Psi chapter was welcomed to Northwestern State University’s campus on Jan. 1, 1963, with foundations of scholarship, leadership, brotherhood and service for both NSU and the Natchitoches community.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. focuses on community service and youth mentorship. Caiden Matthews, a senior business administration major, has expanded his community outreach by participating in the fraternity’s national philanthropy. “Our efforts include the Guide Right Program, which provides mentorship, leadership development and educational opportunities for young men. Many chapters also support initiatives related to education, social justice and community outreach,” Matthews said.
Matthews also shared that the fraternity is hoping to expand outreach and mentorship efforts through their philanthropy and campus engagement for the next year. “We want to build stronger relationships with young men in the community and provide them with resources and support to succeed in academics and life. Additionally, we aim to increase campus engagement through innovative programming and collaborations,” Matthews said.
Being a part of a fraternity comes with many benefits for the men who decide to join. Joshua Nolley is a junior accounting major who believes one of the best decisions he has made was becoming a brother of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. The brothers hold themselves to high standards and uphold numerous achievements that Nolley wanted to embody, helping him become a positive role model for all through joining the fraternity.
“I have learned so much, many doors have opened for me, and I have met many people who have achieved what I aspire to. This bond of fraternity brings together hundreds of thousands of men to make each other better and to improve our community, which is a beautiful thing,” Nolley said.
The fraternity has also given Nolley several great memories to cherish even after he becomes an alumnus of the fraternity. “One of my favorite memories in the fraternity was attending the C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference this past fall in October 2024. This conference provided leadership training for undergraduate students and taught us how to be well-adjusted young men in school, with our families and in the community,” Nolley said.
“It also covered how to run businesses and maintain our mental and physical health,” Nolley said. “Beyond the wealth of information I received, I had the opportunity to meet and network with many brothers from across the United States and other countries. Overall, it was a wonderful experience where I learned a lot while enjoying fellowship with other brothers.”
Being a part of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is more than just participating in fraternal activities for the brothers. Being a brother means committing to excellence, brotherhood, and service. The brothers of NSU’s Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. are committed to continuing to improve themselves in the future.
