Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded at Howard University in 1911. From the beginning, Omegas have lived by the motto “Friendship is essential to the soul,” and the fraternity’s cardinal principles are manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift.
Carlton Johnson II is a junior health and exercise science major. Johnson joined the Omegas last spring but has always felt a part of the brotherhood. This year, Johnson strives to bring a variety of cultures and campus connections to the fraternity. “I want to expand the knowledge about not just what goes on in Omega Psi Phi, but what goes on in all the Divine Nine organizations,” Johnson said. “We all put in a lot of work to plan events and we want everybody to enjoy it.”
Jaelen Sturgis is a senior health and exercise science major who crossed over into the fraternity last spring to further his values and beliefs. Sturgis’s background in New Orleans pushed him to show young men that higher education is possible, no matter what their walk of life may be. “As a brotherhood, you get to build that bond with each other and you get to surround yourself with like-minded people,” Sturgis said.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. has had a successful year of school workshops, cookouts, karaoke nights and more, and the brothers continue to strive to build strong bonds with one another.
