Theta Chi is one of Northwestern State University’s many fraternities and was established on campus in 1973. The fraternity is recognized by its red and white colors, rattlesnake symbol and currently has 20 active members. The primary focus of Theta Chi is to produce men who are generous, hard-working, caring and who adhere to the fraternity’s motto of Always Extending a Helping Hand.
Theta Chi caught the attention of Dylan Guillory, a sophomore criminal justice major, because of the warm atmosphere the fraternity welcomed him with. “Theta Chi stood out to me because I saw people who were being themselves no matter what,” Guillory said. “They made me feel like I could be me all day and every day!”
Theta Chi is also known for having a philanthropy called the United Service Organizations (USO). Their philanthropy is dedicated to providing services to those who have served and are currently serving in the military. John Collier, a junior nursing major, was drawn to the fraternity because of the involvement it had with the USO and its relation to his own family. “My dad is a military veteran and the fraternity had a military background of helping active members of the military and veterans,” Collier said. “The guys had morals and knew what they valued and with the way that they held themselves, I knew it would be something I wanted to be a part of.”
Theta Chi not only helps with the USO but also involves itself in volunteer work and learning about real-world issues throughout campus and the Natchitoches community. Sterling Player is a junior electrical engineering technology major whose favorite part of being a member of Theta Chi is the involvement it has with educating its members on issues of the world.
“A lot of us had gotten together and went to Trinity Church to hear a lady speak on domestic violence,” Player said. “It was really eye-opening for many of us and what that type of violence can do to a person and how it changes them. We also plan to attend more seminars, such as those dealing with mental health.”
Theta Chi is a fraternity whose members are constantly focused on bettering themselves and getting involved in the community around them by using their brotherhood to help those in need.
