The Theta Nu chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity is a service fraternity that dedicates its time and services to Northwestern State University’s band. Kappa Kappa Psi’s brotherhood is based on acts of service to bands, excelling in musicianship and being role models. The brothers of this organization work to make the college band experience the best it can be for new and returning members of the Spirit of Northwestern, as well as for other band programs.
Remi Blanchard is a senior instrumental music education member and treasurer for the fraternity. Blanchard joined the organization in the fall of 2021, as she enjoyed seeing the impact that Kappa Kappa Psi had with the band. “I enjoyed watching the organization help us during band camp. I was inspired to join also because my section leader was a brother and got me to go to the first informational, which hooked me,” Blanchard said.
Blanchard’s favorite memory from this year was Classic on the Cane, an event hosted by the band that allows high school bands from all over the state to compete against one another. The fraternity also helps to get NSU’s own band ready to perform at the end of this event and set up any equipment they may need.
“This is a full day of service helping out our band and also high school bands. I have been on the field crew for the past two years, which means I got to see every show and help get them on and off the field. After a long day’s work, I always get to sing our fraternity hymn with my fraternity brothers, as well as alumni from past years,” Blanchard said.
Kappa Kappa Psi is not only about providing services to band programs but creating individuals with strong qualities through services and musical connections. Each member is responsible for upholding honor, integrity, respect and loyalty while in the program.
Solon Burris is a junior biology major and vice president of the fraternity who has learned about accountability through the fraternity. “To me, Kappa Kappa Psi represents accountability. There is so much everyone can learn, and being accountable for your responsibilities and life is a lesson I think this organization teaches well,” Burris said.
Kappa Kappa Psi is a great program for those who love music and is great for creating lifelong connections. “If you want to be in the band program and you want to do more with your limited time at this university, Kappa Kappa Psi is great for making connections, establishing leadership qualities, promoting welfare for the band and enhancing your musical capabilities,” Burris said. “Any Greek organization can give you letters and family, but Kappa Kappa Psi can give you life lessons that you will carry with you far after you’ve graduated!”
Kappa Kappa Psi plays a major role in making the band experience a positive and enjoyable experience for all. Kelly Carter, a sophomore criminal justice major and vice president of membership, wants other students to know that joining Kappa Kappa Psi has been one of the best opportunities that she’s been given during her time at NSU.
“This is truly one of the best things that I have been able to do, not only for myself but for others as well,” Carter said. “It might seem like hard work, but when you are around the friends that you can also call your brothers, it is always worth it.”
