Tau Beta Sigma is a co-educational service organization that serves Northwestern State University’s band by helping with uniforms, passing out water during football games and cleaning up the field after the Spirit of Northwestern performs.
Jeannette Bentancourt is a senior biology major who has loved every minute of serving the band while having fun with her new sisters. “My favorite thing about Tau Beta Sigma is the sisterhood and family that has encompassed the entire organization. We all act like real sisters. Being an only child, having these girls who I have come to call sisters is very special to me,” Bentancourt said.
“The most unique thing about Tau Beta Sigma is definitely our bond,” Bentancourt said. “The bond between the sisters is just something that can’t be replicated.”
The sorority serves as a parallel for Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, fulfilling a similar role in the college and band setting by benefiting the Spirit of Northwestern in any way possible. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Sigma Alpha Iota also share very similar goals of bringing together like-minded individuals with a love for music, but each Greek organization has their own mission and distinct place on campus.
“I would absolutely recommend others to join our organization. It is a great experience to be a part of, especially if you love serving the band,” Bentancourt said. “It’s even great if you just want to branch out and get to know more people, because we have sisters from all over the band, different majors and different types of people.”
Tau Beta Sigma is a great organization for members of the Spirit of Northwestern who wish to take their dedication a step further and benefit the band as a whole. This sorority is just one of many music sororities and fraternities on campus, yet that doesn’t diminish the importance of Tau Beta Sigma and its impact for collegiate band members and music lovers.
