KNWD is Northwestern State University’s radio station, run by students for students. The station runs a 24/7 broadcast with various music genres, news and podcasts. Using student DJs, KNWD is a catalyst for musical diversity, providing an outlet for a variety of students around campus.
Grace Jensen, senior communication major and general manager of KNWD, feels that KNWD’s goal is to incorporate a variety of genres and artists and expose students to new music. “We try not to stick to a specific genre. The variety we have is a really good opportunity for people to step out of their comfort zones,” Jensen said.
To create this mosaic of music, the staff at KNWD not only work hard in the office but make efforts to get to know each other on a personal level. “A majority of us fostered friendships through our shared love and passion for KNWD,” Jensen said. “I think that’s what makes us work so well together and what makes what we do so important.”
Brennan Smith, junior computer information systems major and music director for KNWD, makes it his goal to introduce people to new artists. “We at KNWD really want to bring exposure to more niche underground artists. We try to value a lot of local artists and a lot of small-time artists that are just starting out,” Smith said.
Smith recognizes that the radio station is useful for more than sharing music; it’s also for learning real-world skills. “KNWD has given me an insight on how to run and expand a business. It’s also inspired me to get more involved and given me the willingness to do more than just what I am scheduled to do,” he said.
Jeremy Wade is a junior veterinary tech major and news director of KNWD. Wade has worked at the station for three years and enjoys hosting Demon Announcements and Modern News. “I think KNWD is a way to diversify and unify everybody in a very unique way,” Wade said. “We want people to see different perspectives through music.”
Wade is excited to feature live news by hitting the road and reporting campus events. “Being heard on the radio is one of the best things. It’s one of the things that attracted me to KNWD,” Wade said.
KNWD is an environment where new members can feel welcomed. Coree Nash, senior social work major and event coordinator for KNWD, says he had an easy time adjusting during his first year with the staff. “Working with Grace and the other members of KNWD has been very helpful. They make me feel included in everything I do,” Nash said.
As DJs are filtering through the station, one thing is clear: KNWD has an open-door policy for ideas, perspectives, music and personality. “You don’t really have to be staff to be helpful to KNWD. The doors are always open,” Nash said.
