NSU TV News Service is one of the many student-led media organizations that students at Northwestern State University can join. The organization gives students several opportunities to participate in and learn about different forms of media. Throughout NSU TV, members gain hands-on experience in broadcasting, reporting, writing and video production as well as learning how equipment is used.
Victoria Rodrigue is a senior communication major who reports for the organization and has many responsibilities when it comes to putting together stories. “As a reporter, I consult with other reporters and my advisor to find stories to report on. I go to the field and film B-roll as well as conduct interviews. I write the script for my voiceover, record and edit the voiceover. I edit the video together in Adobe Premiere Pro, where I combine the B-Roll, voiceover, interviews and graphics, as well as editing to adjust sound, lighting and video quality,” Rodrigue said.
NSU TV has been a part of many major events for NSU this year and covered the main aspects of them. “Some major events NSU TV has covered are the Long Purple Line induction ceremony for 2024, the Presidential investiture and the congressional update from Senator Bill Cassidy,” Rodrigue said. “We also reported on most of the Homecoming events for 2024, which turned out amazing and we covered a lot of that week.”
For Elena Pigg, a senior communication major, NSU TV has opened the door to new friendships, favorite memories and learning experiences. Some of her most memorable opportunities include filming at NSU’s job fair and working at Dark Woods Adventure Park during the Halloween season. “Dark Woods was great. We got to go behind the scenes and see how they do what they do. We built good friendships and learned how to problem solve, because we had quite a few problems going on,” Pigg said.
“Then we did a job fair, and I got to work with my new best friend Dominique, who showed me how she does her shots,” Pigg said. “She’s very much into documentaries, so she taught me a lot of how to show up, set up and get good shots and angles, which is really helpful.”
Kendall Fuller is a senior communication major who has had several opportunities to work with members of the organization and has developed numerous skills that they’ll use in the future. “I had a partner for a story one time and we edited a story together, which took a really long time. We had fun doing it and I really enjoyed getting to edit that story with her,” Fuller said.
Being a part of NSU TV allows students to participate hands-on in media while also gaining skills and connections which will benefit them greatly in their future careers. Not only have they gained experience that will last a lifetime through the program, but also made friendships that will carry on outside of their time at NSU.
