‘Beware of Alligator’ signs now on NSU campus

NSU’s physical plant added new signs warning of alligators along the walking trail by Chaplain’s Lake over the summer.

Dale Wohletz, physical plant director, said he was asked to put the signs up because people had been seeing alligators in the lake.

“I have seen them and have watched them crossing the levee down here by the physical plant,” Wohletz said. “The signs were put up as a warning, and we sure don’t want people to feed them.”

Chaplain’s Lake is one of the practice sites for NSU’s rowing team. Jason Stelly, head coach, said the alligators won’t affect the rowing team’s practices.

Stelly said that even though the signs were put up recently, the alligators have actually been around for a while. He said they won’t affect the rowers because the alligators usually stay away from the noise and movement of the team’s practices.

Sheridan Douglas, junior, is a student who recently started running on the trail by Chaplain’s Lake. Douglas said she has seen the signs and thinks it is somewhat scary that there are alligators in the lake.

She also said that although she’s going to watch out for the alligators, the possibility of seeing one isn’t stopping her from using the trail.
