Athlete of the Week: Kyle Moore

Hailing from Magnolia, Texas, Kyle Moore is the son of a Southland Conference defensive alumni who decided to fulfill his dream of playing Division 1 football by joining the Demon roster after just one year at Navarro College.

An All-Montgomery County Second-Team selection, Moore accompanied 61 tackles and three interceptions to capstone a breakout senior season at Magnolia West High School, leading him to the opportunity to play at the junior college level at Navarro College.

This interim stage between high school and Division 1 athletics allowed for Moore to solidify his foundation as a defensive playmaker, making strides towards playing fast and making intelligent plays.

This is what caught the eye of the Demons defensive coordinator, Mike Lucas. Lucas also happened to be the defensive coordinator of Moore’s father, Mitchell Moore, when he was an athlete at Sam Houston State over two decades ago.

Even before Kyle changed his number to 35 to match his father’s, Lucas saw intangible evidence that the younger Moore shared the same great qualities that make star players.

“Their work ethic (is similar),” Lucas said. “Their attitude. They’re both yes sir, no sir. You can coach them hard, and they’ll get after it. They respond well to coaching.”

“You can tell Mitch raised Kyle old school,” Lucas said. “Nowadays, you coach some kids hard and they pout. Kyle doesn’t. He’s been parented hard and raised that way. He’s got a work ethic in the weight room and the offseason program like his dad had. Mitchell was a good player for us, and Kyle’s cut out of the same mold.”

In his first season as a Demon, Moore made an instant impact on and off the field, playing in all 11 games and recording 21 tackles.

In addition, Moore made the 2018 Southland Conference Commissioner’s Fall Honor Roll, joining the growing ranks of academically accomplished student athletes at Northwestern State.

Moore is a junior year technical engineering major who wishes to own his own business someday. He’ll next step on the field Oct. 12 in Thibodaux, Louisiana, against Nicholls State.
