All season the team has been talking about starting fast and scoring early which has aided many of their wins this season.

Northwestern State University of Louisiana’s Demons cruised past Houston Baptist University’s Huskies this past Saturday, scoring 24 points in the first quarter.

Leading the scoring frenzy was running back Garrison Johnson who scored one of the touchdowns that quarter.

Quarterback Zach Clement did a great play with 30 completions for 373 yards and 2 touchdowns. Alongside him was running back Kenneth Lacy with 107 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.

With Clement still throwing 3 interceptions in the game, Northwestern’s defense did the job only allowing 10 points for the entire game. The defense also grabbed two picks in the first quarter of the game.

According to Jason Pugh, assistant athletics director for media relations, Lacy said, “It builds that trust that we can be that defense who can be dominant.”

All season the team has been talking about starting fast and scoring early which has aided many of their wins this season.

Scoring early makes for an easier game all around and once you start fast you can set the tempo for the entire game.

“Coming out of that meeting we knew what we had to do – putting it together for four quarters and starting fast,” head coach Brad Laird said.

Star wide receiver Javon Antonio stated in an interview that the key to winning games for NSU is to start fast, citing the loss against Eastern Illinois University on Oct. 8.

“If we started that game fast I felt like they would have not been able to keep up with us,” Antonio said.

A big road win helps boost the morale heading into the homecoming game this weekend versus Southeast Missouri.
