During their weekly meeting, the Student Government Association announced that filings for the March election were extended to Wednesday, Feb. 19. SGA President Terrell Woodard Jr. added that a vacancy for the treasurer position will be voted in-house next Monday.
Woodard, who is also the chair of the Election Board, explained the inner workings of the senate and how interested candidates should file for senator.
“If you do decide to run for Student Government Association senator, you’re going to file under your academic college,” Woodard said. “So you’re not just going to run at-large like our old system was, but you will be filing for your specific academic college.”
Based on the amendments passed last spring by SGA, the senate is now composed of 19 senators: three from each of the four academic colleges, four senators-at-large and three freshman senators to be voted on during the Fall Homecoming election.
“The top three most voted people per academic college will be granted the position of academic senator. Now, from that pool, everyone else who did not make it to the top three of their academic college will then be placed onto a separate list and the top four people will be voted as senator-at-large,” Woodard said.
Woodard later announced the resignation of SGA Treasurer Alexander Engstrom. “Our student body treasurer has stepped down from the position so that now means we have a vacancy for the student body treasurer,” he said.
The Current Sauce reached out to Engstrom and he declined to comment.
“There is a lot of fiscal business that needs to be done between now and April, so we do have to elect someone to be able to be in that position,” Woodard said.
Next Monday, SGA will hear nominations for treasurer and will do an in-house vote to name an interim treasurer until the student body elects a treasurer. The new treasurer will be sworn in April during the inauguration.
Current senators eligible to fill that position are Madysen Morgan, Lyndsay Brown, Christian James, Chimani Murphy, Ja’Naya Woodard, Zenobia Poydras and Nilah Pollard. According to the constitution, only senators who have completed two semesters in SGA are eligible to fill the position, Terrell Woodard explained.
During the meeting, senators also passed resolution R.F. 2025-03. This resolution is to recognize and honor Black History Month.
Vice President Hannah Davis announced that the link to RSVP for the Women’s Leadership Luncheon on March 6 is open and encouraged people to attend the event. The deadline to RSVP for this event is Feb. 24 at noon.
Any student interested in running for senator must have a cumulative and a past semester GPA of 2.0. The intent to run form can be found here. A more detailed report of the minutes can be found in SGA’s Purple Portal profile or this link.
