The students of Northwestern State University take immense pride in their school and attend many events to show their school spirit. Pep rallies, tailgates and sporting events are great ways for students to support their fellow Demons.
Pep rallies take place before sporting events to get students excited and in support of their school. Pep rallies hype students up with cheer performances and, on one notable occasion, exciting words from NSU’s president. The year’s first pep rally was made even more memorable with a performance by LA Roxx, who entertained students with popular rock songs to bring some extra energy to campus.
Tessa Dalme is a freshman communication major who was blown away by the extravagance of NSU’s pep rallies. “Attending my first NSU pep rally was an unforgettable experience. The energy was electric compared to my high school’s pep rallies,” Dalme said. “Every performance was top-notch and full of school spirit.”
Another way that students get excited about football games is by attending tailgates, hosted just before the games start. At the tailgates, there are various activities such as cornhole and backyard football, as well as food and drinks. At the Family Day tailgate, friends and family of NSU students are invited to come spend the evening with their student while also supporting the Football team.
Many students enjoy food and drinks provided by different organizations that set up booths at the tailgate. Emily Dupoy, a freshman communication major, had a great time tailgating due to the efforts of various student organizations. “I got to see some of my friends and their families, and I loved the games that Greek life had set up,” Dupoy said.
One of the best ways to see NSU pride in full form is to attend sporting events like football games. The energy at NSU football games is truly a sight to see. The student section can be seen as full of action as students cheer on their school. Many students even paint their faces purple to show their NSU pride.
Megan Johnson is a freshman education major who attended several NSU games and loved her experience in the student section. “I saw how one of my friends gets when he watches football and it was funny seeing him yell while watching the game,” Johnson said.
During the games, students often have different chants that coordinate with the band to increase the energy in the stadium. One example is the students putting up the signature “Fork ‘Em” symbol and chanting “N-S-U.” Then they spin their hand in a circle and yell “Woooo!” NSU students truly have a passion like no other when it comes to cheering on their team.
The spirit throughout the student body of NSU is a very important part of campus and NSU students boast many unique ways to show their pride. From pep rallies and tailgates with various spirit groups to football games with the band and the student section, NSU students enjoy showing their love for their school and finding ways to cheer them on and show their passion.
