On Aug. 28th, Northwestern State University’s football team took home an exciting and long-awaited victory against rival team Alcorn State University.
Throughout the game, the Demons fought hard against Alcorn State and a rain delay that postponed the game for over an hour. This did not stop the team’s energy, though, and fueled them in the last quarters of the game, earning them a 20-10 win against Alcorn State. In celebration of this win, both members of the team and fans stormed the field, creating a memory that will hold a special place in NSU’s history.
Football Coach Blaine McCorkle saw this game as a new beginning for the team and an achievement of the team’s hard work.“We’re kind of starting to see the fruits of our labor, and I think, to the young men on our team, it means a lot, because they worked really, really hard for a really long time, and a lot of people doubted them,” McCorkle said.
Kolbe Burrell, a senior communication and health and human performance major, is a running back who considers their win a result of the entire team’s dedication to becoming better. “We started to focus more on each other, the small details, all the little stuff that gets you beat. We started knocking those out and really focused on helping each other to make sure everyone was ready,” Burrell said.
While this win was exciting and memorable for the team, Danny Sears, a junior sports and recreation major and linebacker for the team, will always remember how it pushed them to continue to improve for future seasons.
“You’ve got to get to the next week. It’s constantly about continuing to improve. That’s definitely the next step forward for us as we look ahead,” Sears said.
The win against Alcorn State will be remembered by the players and students who witnessed NSU’s long-awaited comeback, and the football team aspired to carry that momentum into the rest of their season.
