Northwestern State University’s Lip Sync is a homecoming tradition, the battle between registered student organizations featuring groups as they mouth along to a mixtape of music, adding their own choreography and style to impress both the selected judges and audience. This year’s theme was Broadway, centering around musicals and productions with catchy tunes.
Multiple Greek organizations and campus groups battled in the highly anticipated show, with the overall goal of being both People’s Choice and overall champion. The People’s Choice award was determined by the votes of students in attendance, while judges selected the overall winner.
Although competitive spirits were high and all groups performed well, Phi Mu secured the People’s Choice title. The women of Phi Mu earned their title as People’s Choice through determination and lively performance based on the musical “Legally Blonde.“
For Ashlyn Underwood, a freshman musical theater major, this first Phi Mu Lip Sync experience sets an unforgettable standard for her sorority journey. “It was either win, or win, there was no other option! I am so proud of my sisters and the accomplishments we made by earning People’s Choice,” Underwood said. With the excitement of the People’s Choice was immediate, the much-anticipated overall winner remained a mystery, adding to the Homecoming week suspense.
At the end of the week, during the homecoming pep rally, the overall Lip Sync champion was announced. Driven by their work ethic and love of their sorority, Tri Sigma successfully claimed the title of NSU’s 2025 Lip Sync Champions with an exciting performance based on the musical production of “Mamma Mia.”
CeeCee Doucet, a sophomore strategic communications and theater major, was excited to learn of Tri Sigma’s victory. “It’s so rewarding to know that all of the work we put together paid off and blossomed into a winning title. The connection me and my sisters have is unmatched, and the sheer excitement and thankfulness we feel towards the judges and one another, couldn’t be better,” Doucet said.
Though Tri Sigma and Phi Mu took crowns of victory, Hal Williams III, a sophomore communication major, still enjoyed participating in Lip Sync with his Pi Kappa Alpha brothers. “For my second year, I feel like I have grown so much. I have really tapped into who I am, and my confidence has grown. It felt nice to get onstage and show everyone what I have and who I am based on my dancing, and just to show how confident I am, as well as my love for my frat,” Williams said.
Lip Sync once again served as a thrilling highlight of the 2025 homecoming season. The event, with its blend of tradition, theater and talent, pushed the homecoming celebration forward.
