Miss Old Gold and Black is an annual scholarship competition put on by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Contestants go through a series of interviews, practices and talent shows before winners are selected based on intellect, beauty and talent.
Gabrielle Essex, a freshman nursing major, was crowned the 2025-2026 Miss Old Gold and Black. She was also awarded Best Talent, Most Ads and People’s Choice.
Essex is the founder and secretary for Health Occupation and Students of America, a member of the Student Nurses Association and a Presidential Ambassador. She decided to participate in the competition due to her love for pageants after keeping track of Miss Old Gold and Black throughout high school.
“It’s really not about the title in general—I love that so many girls can come together and put themselves on the line, express themselves in such a fun, creative way, and also share with the people how independent and educated they are,” Essex said.
“It was a great experience,” Essex said. “I feel like I’m kind of receiving my benefits for all the hard work that I put into the pageant.”
Trinitee Thibodeaux, a freshman musical theater major, was crowned Miss Black. She is a member of Phi Mu Sorority and the Baptist Collegiate Ministry, and joined the competition to inspire others and grow in confidence.
“[Winning] felt amazing,” Thibodeaux said. “It felt like I truly accomplished something and that I can do anything I put my mind to…I know that it may seem nerve-racking at first, but with all the practices we did and all the time we spent together, I became more comfortable in going forward and coming into my own.”
Madison Boutte, a sophomore nursing major, was crowned Miss Old Gold. Boutte is a member of the Student Government Association, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and La Belle Femme. She joined the competition to challenge herself and inspire others to step into new experiences.
“It represents growth and confidence. It gave me a chance to challenge myself and connect with others. My favorite part was getting to meet new people and bond with the other contestants. The experience brought us together in a positive way, and I loved the supportive atmosphere,” Boutte said.
“[Winning] felt amazing and surreal,” Boutte said. “I was proud of myself and grateful for everyone who supported me throughout the process.”
The Miss Old Gold and Black competition is about showcasing one’s best self and being motivated to help others while trying new things. It can allow contestants to share experiences and impact the community, and this year’s winners will do just that.
