Established in 1914, The Current Sauce represents the voice of Northwestern State University. As NSU’s official newspaper, The Current Sauce serves the student body and the Natchitoches community by delivering essential updates on campus and Natchitoches events.
With both printed and digital editions, The Current Sauce’s staff of students is constantly active and on their feet, seeking the next significant story to inform and engage their readers.
Kallie Bourgeois, a junior communication major with a concentration in journalism, broadcast and digital media production, is the Editor-in-Chief for The Current Sauce. As Editor-in-Chief, Bourgeois is responsible for managing her staff of 22 members and uploading daily content.
Bourgeois’s experience as Editor-in-Chief has not only shaped her personally but has also cemented her legacy in The Current Sauce’s history. “The most rewarding aspect of work with The Current Sauce for me has been the personal growth. I was never this social or outgoing until I put myself in this environment,” Bourgeois said. “As Editor-in-Chief, the most gratifying part has been every print edition we have produced since I’ve been in charge.”
Lalaina Wood is a senior health and exercise science major and the current photo editor for The Current Sauce. In her role as photo editor, Wood is involved in all aspects of photography for the newspaper.
While being both an employee of the organization and a student-athlete, Wood explained what specific time management skills she developed to balance both her sports and journalism lives. “I try my best not to procrastinate. I am the type of person who likes to get all my work done for the week so I can handle other responsibilities effectively and efficiently. Writing out my entire week and checking off things as I complete them is a huge help. It helps me stay organized and know what I have to do and when it needs to be done,” Wood said.
Ultimately, Wood’s commitment to planning demonstrates how time management is the key to excelling in high-demanding roles, especially in the newsroom.
Phillip Voorhees, a sophomore and vocal performance major, is The Current Sauce’s viewpoints editor. Voorhees uses his position to ensure that The Current Sauce amplifies the diverse voices and perspectives of the NSU student body.
“My team and I have at least one article due a week, and I have to try and manage what other reporters on the team are doing, making sure they are all on top of their game so we as a team can stay on track,” Voorhees said.
“But what makes my job easier is that I have so many connections in the music and arts department, which gives me a lot of people to interview for their opinions,” Voorhees said. Balancing his editorial responsibilities with his network in the Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts, Voorhees demonstrates the resourcefulness an editor must possess to maintain vitality.
The work produced by The Current Sauce demonstrates its importance as more than just a source of campus news—it is a vital training ground for future professionals. The Current Sauce hones the skills of communication, leadership and community engagement. As the paper shares the news of Northwestern State University, it remains committed to informing the community while shaping the next generation of newscasters.
