Culinary student flies into internship

An internship with nonprofit Wings Over Natchitoches gave one NSU student the opportunity to excel in her future career as an event planner. Senior hospitality student Kimberly Voorhies began her internship eight months ago.

Tasked with assisting Stanley Salter, Wings Over Natchitoches treasurer, in planning this year’s airshow, Voorhies tackled a diverse range of responsibilities.

“It has really given me a lot of insight into planning an event of this size,” she said.

Her ultimate goal is to own her own venue and offer a catering service.

This internship “fell into my lap,” Voorhies said. She had previously worked part-time for Salter, an owner of a local furniture store. Her connections with Salter and NSU’s hospitality department created a strong partnership with Wings Over Natchitoches.

“When they found out my connection with culinary [department], it went from there. NSU’s culinary is going to cater the event now, and all the proceeds are going to go back into the department,” Voorhies said.

The annual Air Show relies volunteers and sponsors to make the event possible. It brings NSU students together with the Natchitoches community with more than 125 student volunteers each year.

“Volunteering for Wings Over Natchitoches was such a great experience as a student,” said Rebekah Aultman, who worked as a pilot’s assistant. “I was able to help the pilots as they prepared for their flights and hang out with them after. I learned a lot about aviation and also just how much hard work goes into putting on an event of this size. I cannot wait to volunteer again next year.”
