For the third year, Northwestern State University students will be able to participate in Leadership NSU. The conference is being sponsored by the Student Government Association and will be held Jan. 26-28.

SGA Senator Jacob Ellis is expecting 400-500 students to register for the conference. Under the slogan “From Apathy to Action,” Leadership NSU will provide students with a wide range of speakers who will cover topics including hazing, sexual assault and how to run meetings.

“I hope students will come away from the conference wanting to make a difference on campus,” Ellis said.

Speakers include Sebastian Terry, Dr. Gentry McCreary, Kim Novak and Rasheed Cromwell. Students familiar with Leadership NSU may recognize some speakers from past conferences.

“Our guest speakers will deliver training, workshops and presentations on topics such as service, emerging leadership, running better meetings, relationships, recruitment, brotherhood and sisterhood, communication and much more,” the conference homepage says.

Another featured speaker will be Melissa Ruiz from Swift Kick, an organization that strives for “turning apathy into action.” Jessica Gendron Williams, a representative from Phired Up, will discuss hazing issues in Greek organizations.

Another speaker, Bonny Shade, is a sexual assault survivor who speaks at colleges about her experience and invites audience members to “discuss the uncomfortable and equip [them] with realistic intervention strategies.”

To attend the conference, students should sign into OrgSync and fill out the online registration form. Attendance is free to all NSU students.
