“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” was this year’s theme for one of the world’s most extravagant fashion events of the year, the Costume Institute Gala, or the Met Gala.

The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, is the one time a year that all big name designers, models and Hollywood stars join together to celebrate and fundraise at the new exhibit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Costume institute.

Every year, Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour sits down with Vogue staffers to handpick which celebrities will be allowed to attend the event. These celebrities are then dressed by some of the biggest designers, to best represent that year’s theme.

Previous years’ themes have consisted of “Camp: Notes on Fashion” in 2019 and “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” in 2018.

One of the greatest things about the event is that the guests who attend the event have to buy a ticket that costs upward of $30,000. That money is then donated to The Met to help pay for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Costume institute.

The event usually takes place on the first Monday of every May, but due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the 2020 event was cancelled and rescheduled to Sept. 13, 2021. With COVID-19 playing a factor in this year’s Met Gala, all guests who attended were asked to be vaccinated if they wanted to attend.

Luckily, many stars were able to hit the carpet this year and share their interpretations of the theme “In America.”

Singer and songwriter Billie Eilish, who was one of the four co-chairs of the event, showed up in a blush pink Cinderella style ball gown, created by designer Oscar de la Renta.

“I want to show up as the belle of the ball,” Eillish told designers. And that’s exactly what she did.

Rapper Lil Nas X made his first appearance at the Met Gala this year, delivering a layered surprise as he entered. Lil Nas is known for pushing the boundaries and making a performance so I was certainly not disappointed to see this reveal.

Lil Nas X entered wearing a large golden cape which after being taken off revealed an even better gold suit of armor. After flaunting it around he then revealed that he was wearing a gold and black body sparkly bodysuit, which was also created by Versace, like the rest of his pieces.

Even Addison Rae, a Louisiana local from Shreveport, made her way on the Met Gala carpet. After blowing up on TikTok, Addison made a name for herself in the Hollywood scene, allowing her to earn her spot on the carpet. Addison took to the Met wearing a gorgeous vintage 2003 red dress created by Tom Ford for Gucci.

If you missed the Met Gala, do not worry it will be back around this coming May on the first Monday. Get ready, because the stars and celebrities do not come to play when it comes to the biggest fashion event of the year.
