Northwestern State University of Louisiana is home to the Hispanic Student Journalists Association (HSJA), an organization celebrating Hispanic culture through social media and the award-winning podcast titled “Latino Living.”
Mayte Sierra, Latino Living podcast co-host defines the podcast as, “a podcast that talks about cultural awareness as well as issues young Hispanics are facing here at central Louisiana,”
The importance of Latino Living does not reside in one specific culture, but spreads awareness through the voices of NSU students. Sierra says, “I’m Mexican, but I also learn from different cultures, as like, Columbians, Hondurans – we’ve had French exchange students. We learn from different cultures as well as people from here in Louisiana learn from our culture and our issues.”
HSJA welcomes interested students to join their cause. “Don’t be scared! When people hear Latino Living or the organization that’s tied with it – the Hispanic Student Journalists Association – they think ‘Oh, I’m not Hispanic so I can’t join.’ But no, it’s open to everybody,” stated Sierra.
When asked for advice about getting involved with Latino Living, Sierra says, “We need people to join if this podcast is something that interests you.” The podcast’s host claims that the crew will help all volunteers through the process and encourage students to not be scared. Sierra further explained, “Just do it. Give yourself that opportunity!”
To end the interview, Sierra becomes sentimental about her podcast, saying, “I love the people I’m working alongside. We’re getting new people all the time, and I love to see them prosper just how I’m prospering in this organization.”
“Please join! We would love to have more people,” concludes Mayte Sierra, extending her welcome to future HSJA and Latino Living members.
