Awareness is your duty

Nothing angers me quite like people – especially government officials – who couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the news – especially local news.

One competitor in this year’s Miss Northwestern Lady of the Bracelet pageant was asked in a pre-show interview what our most recent newspaper featured on the cover. She didn’t know the answer and allegedly said to a friend afterward, “How the f— am I supposed to know that?”

Apathy is poison to society. Remember that.

You’d think student leaders would pick up our newspaper and read about what’s happening on campus before they make decisions that affect the student body. Or maybe my hunch is correct: Some of them serve themselves under the guise of school spirit and use “fork ’em!” like a toddler uses crayons – aggressively, and too damn much.

A dedicated team of students works tirelessly to tell this campus’ stories not only to inform but to hopefully spark much-needed conversations in our community on issues both local and national.

If you think choosing one media outlet to follow is a smart move, think again.

Just on this campus, we have The Current Sauce, KNWD, Sports Information and the News Bureau regularly publishing or broadcasting news. Not a single one of these entities can possibly cover as many things by ourselves as we can working together. To be a well-informed NSU student, I suggest keeping up with all of these outlets, plus the Natchitoches Times and the Natchitoches Parish Journal.

To clarify, “keeping up” doesn’t mean reading everything we publish; there’s just not enough time in the day. Pick up a newspaper or open up a web browser, and let your interests do the filtering.
