Student showcase honors late Robert Crew

To celebrate students’ accomplishments, the Department of New Media, Journalism, and Communication developed the New Media Student Showcase. Work is on display in Gallery 2 of the Creative and Performing Arts Annex through March 31.

Christian Boudreaux, a student whose work is featured, thinks the showcase is exciting because it brings attention to students’ skills in the department.

“It’s a way to showcase and celebrate a lot of the creative things that some of the students are doing here on campus,” Boudreaux said.

NSU alumna and Instructor Emily Zering believes this event will demonstrate students’ progress and the effort put into their work.

“We wanted an event to show off what the art students were doing in a visual capacity, because they really haven’t had that opportunity on campus before,” she said.

Also featured in the exhibit, Racheal Gaude said this gives the students a chance to show creativity.

“The show is more about the artistic side of journalism,” she said. “I think it’s giving NSU’s [communication] students a chance to show their journalism works in a creative light, which is a fun twist.”

The department will host a reception March 22 in Orville J. Hanchey Gallery from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Robert Crew, former executive assistant to NSU President Dr. Randall J. Webb, will be honored in both the reception and showcase.

The photographic studio in the CAPA Annex was named after Crew in 2013, when he retired, to recognize his contributions to the art program. His death in January inspired wife Jacque Crew to establish the Robert G. Crew Endowed Scholarship for media and journalism students.

“Robert had always talked about establishing a scholarship in his grandfather’s name,” Jacque Crew said in a February press release announcing the scholarship. “I thought this would be a good way to honor Robert.”

This scholarship, along with other awards, will be presented to students at the reception. Guests can RSVP at nsulastudentshowcase.com
