Northwestern State University’s golf team is a student-led organization centered around helping students interested in golf get to know the sport. The team is welcoming to both experienced players hoping to compete in various tournaments and championships and new players looking to learn how to play the sport.
Reese Kennedy is a sophomore physical science major and current vice president of the club. Before joining the NSU golf team, Kennedy had been playing golf for a little over three years and was interested in joining because of the chance to compete and meet new people. “I joined because I love playing golf, so I wanted to meet people who also love to play golf. I also wanted more opportunities to compete, and I knew being on a team would help with that,” Kennedy said.
NSU offers opportunities for team members to practice individually and with others at the Robert W. Wilson Recreation Complex on campus. Kennedy believes that the best way to practice is to work on the little things first. “The best way to practice is to go out to the range, feel out your swing and get any mistakes taken care of. Then head to the chipping green to practice short game and putting before playing a practice round. That’s at least what I like to do; it’s different for everyone, though,” Kennedy said.
For tournaments and championships, members of the team play both locally in Natchitoches and in surrounding cities like Shreveport and Alexandria. This past season, Kennedy’s favorite memory was playing in the Natchitoches City Championship and placing as the women’s city champion.
Kennedy encourages students interested in the sport to join, even if they don’t have the experience. “Everyone starts somewhere, and what better time to pick up a new hobby than in college? Golf is a lot of fun and a great way to enjoy beautiful weather, so if you’re thinking about giving it a shot, then I’d encourage you to do so,” Kennedy said.
Whether you are experienced or new to the sport, NSU’s golf team gives students an environment where they can learn more about golf, practice with a team and get active within the campus community.
