The Northwestern State University Demon Dazzlers are a group of individuals who perform at numerous events on- and off-campus. They represent NSU with performance, practice and aspirations.
This year, the team is focusing on preparing for new challenges. Mackenzie Scroggs, a senior dance major, is excited for the upcoming season and all of the opportunities. “We are pushing this team to the next level and are hoping to shape the future of this program. The Demon Dazzlers are now performing at football, basketball and volleyball games.” Scroggs said. “We will also be competing at NDA Nationals for the first time in 20 years! We are excited to show the campus and world what we have in store.”
While some may believe that the Demon Dazzlers are just like other performers, they have specific collaborations that set them apart. “One new thing that is happening within the Demon Dazzlers is our one-show model with the Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band,” Scroggs said.
Along with the new events happening for the Demon Dazzlers, they also have three new members. “We are a smaller team, only having eight, but we are mighty, and we’re so excited to have Allyce Richards, Victoria Freeling and Payton Desselles with us,” Scroggs said.
The Demon Dazzlers not only prioritize having a bond on the field, but also having one outside of their uniforms. Ariyonna Sarpy is a senior BFA dance major who appreciates her time growing close with the Dazzlers. “My favorite memory has been bonding with the team during band practice, games and just hanging out. Those moments off the stage really make us closer and help us perform better together,” Sarpy said.
While there is a lot of “new” this year, the Demon Dazzlers still take time to remember the traditions that keep them together. “Before every performance, we form a circle and pray together, and our captain gives us a motivational pep talk. This helps us calm our nerves and get in the zone as one team,” Sarpy said.
Cameron Bruno, a senior dance and nursing major, gave the team the theme song of The Script’s “Hall of Fame” because she felt it represented the Dazzlers, what they do and what they stand for. “This team is doing so many things that have been lost in translation as Dazzlers have graduated out. We are pushing to go beyond what Dazzlers have ever been capable of. I am so proud of this team and couldn’t ask for a better support system,” Bruno said.
This year, the Demon Dazzlers are driven by a collective goal that outlines their purpose as a team. Team members are ready to devote their energy, heart and time to ensure that their vision becomes a reality.
