Demon Heat Color Guard is a spirit group that represents Northwestern State University in hard work, talent and performance, providing structure and connection to its members.
Jasmine Tatum, a freshman nursing major in her first year with Color Guard, described how being on the team has impacted her transition into college. “Being a part of Demon Heat has made my college experience amazing. I am only a freshman, but in this little time, I have met so many people and made so many friendships that I am so thankful for. I truly think this team has pushed me out of my comfort zone and definitely made the transition from high school to college easier,” Tatum said.
Color Guard requires much more work and dedication than many realize. Abby Harris, a sophomore music business major who has been on the team for two years, described the commitment required to participate in color guard at the collegiate level. “We make it look easy, but it’s not easy. We spend five days rehearsing, at least two hours a day, sometimes more, and that’s not even factoring in competition days. So it is a lot of hours put in, but honestly, it’s all completely worth it. The production we put on with our friends is so cool and fun, and we get to make so many memories,” Harris said.
For students considering joining the team, current members emphasize the importance of commitment. Emilie North, a freshman microbiology major in her first year on Color Guard, shared advice for future members. “I would tell someone who is looking to join Demon Heat to only join if they love it. We do challenging choreography and are held to a higher standard than high schoolers, but if they’re ready for the commitment, it’s the most fun thing they’ll ever have. We’re treated like adults, and it’s an amazing environment that encourages growth and improvement. If they love color guard, they will love Demon Heat,” North said.
Through rehearsals, performances and competitions, Demon Heat Color Guard provides students with an opportunity to continue the sport they enjoy at the collegiate level. By balancing commitment and teamwork, the team provides members with a structured environment and an opportunity to build long-lasting relationships while cheering on NSU.
