Northwestern State University has a variety of club sports, including the Disc Golf team, which was created last year. Though currently inactive, interested students can reach out for information at the Wellness, Recreation and Activities Center.
Disc golf, also called frisbee golf, is an outdoor sport where the player throws a disc toward an elevated metal basket from a tee area. Like traditional golf, players try to get the disc into the basket in as few throws as possible. It also shares similar rules with traditional golf.
The sport as we know it began in the early 1960s, with players across the country using various objects as the targets for their flying discs. Ed “Steady” Headrick is known as the father of disc golf, having established the first hole target in 1975. He also founded the Professional Disc Golf Association in 1976.
NSU’s disc golf course was built in 2016, consisting of nine holes for students and players to enjoy. It was upgraded in 2022 to 18 holes. Past players described the course as fun and easy for both beginner and intermediate players.
If any students are interested in reviving NSU’s disc golf team, they can contact the WRAC to learn more.
