Sigma Nu has returned to Northwestern State University after a brief suspension, leaving members of the chapter focused on rebuilding the organization through recruitment and development. This year has marked a period of adjustment and growth for the fraternity.
Lucas Coleman, a senior criminal justice major and president of Sigma Nu, discussed the mindset the chapter adopted as it worked to rebuild following its suspension. “I want to take a moment to brag on my guys, because the biggest thing is mindset. We had a lot of stuff stacked against us, but we had to change our mindsets. If we think we’re done, then we’re done, and I didn’t want to see that for us,” Coleman said.
“We set a quota of 30 guys for us this semester, which some may see as an impossible goal, but we just went in with a mindset of ‘if we want something, we’re going to get it.’ And this year, we recruited 24 guys, which is the most we have recruited in the last four years,” Coleman said.
Diversity is another aspect that members emphasized during the rebuilding process. Anthony Ugokwe, a junior nursing major and scholarship chairman for Sigma Nu, discussed the chapter’s approach to inclusion. “Diversity is a huge part of Sigma Nu. We have about every culture present in our fraternity, and I don’t see many other organizations like that. We want other people to see that we are open and accepting of everyone,” Ugokwe said.
For new members, the chapter’s focus on brotherhood has played a huge role in their experience. Chase McLaurin, a freshman communication major and new member of Sigma Nu, talked about his first year in the fraternity. “Sigma Nu has taught me a lot about brotherhood, and that brotherhood means there will always be someone there for you. If you had told me when I first came into college that I would end up with 20 other guys that I can be around, talk to and rely on, I definitely wouldn’t have believed you, but that is my reality now. My brothers always treat me well, and they’re always looking out for me, and I always have someone to hold me up when I feel down, and I really love that,” McLaurin said.
As Sigma Nu continues its first year active again, members are focused on remodeling the chapter and strengthening internal connections. Recruitment and inclusion remain priorities moving forward, and they strive to continue representing NSU in a good light.
