Tau Beta Sigma continues to provide service and support to the Northwestern State University band program through hands-on assistance at performances and events throughout the year. The national band service sorority supports both the Spirit of Northwestern Marching Band and the university’s concerts. Members assist with game day preparation, performances and upkeep within the Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts.
Rebekah Edmonds, a graduate student and alumna of the sorority, talked about why she wanted to be a part of the sorority. “I joined Tau Beta Sigma because I saw how much it meant to other people and wanted to have that community. The experience helped me stay at NSU and make so many memories,” Edmonds said.
Avary Stutzman, a senior biology major and president of the organization, said the chapter’s primary role is to meet the needs of the Spirit of Northwestern. “The chapter supports the band by helping them prepare for performances and football games, whether that is serving food or helping with uniforms,” Stutzman said.
“We help aid in keeping the Creative and Performing Arts building tidy and help raise money for the band members,” Stutzman said. According to Stutzman, members frequently work behind the scenes to keep everyone supported.
Stutzman also emphasized the service that contributes to relationships formed within the chapter. “The sisterhood in this organization is really unique. We all join for the common goal of service and for greater bands, so the sisterhood comes naturally. You create lifelong bonds with people you would never have met otherwise. I have met my favorite people from this organization, and I am surrounded by people who let me be myself and express who I am,” Stutzman said.
The organization’s continued work reflects its commitment to strengthening NSU’s band program through consistent service and involvement. As the chapter moves forward, its focus remains on meeting the needs of the band while providing leadership opportunities for students.
