The 2025 season marked another year of successes for the Lady Demon track and field team, with both individual and team improvements leading them to win multiple titles at the Southland Conference (SLC).
Margaret Conteh, a senior criminal justice major, is in her second year of being a Lady Demon and transferred to the team after seeing their dedication to the sport and how they competed at Regionals. “I saw their women’s 4x400m relay at Regionals, and we were all in the same heat. I didn’t know the school, but they were competing very hard, and I honestly was wowed. Then after the race, they were all together and happy … and I started to think that that’s what I’m missing,” Conteh said.
This year, Conteh wanted to work on consistency in her races. “[My] number one [goal] is definitely being consistent, but also executing my races to the fullest that I can. This is my last year, and I of course want to give it my all, see what I can really do because I’m at a place where I am actually seeing the improvements,” Conteh said.
The dedication of both new and old members is one reason for the team’s continuous success and growth. One major accomplishment for the Lady Demons this past year was once again placing at the SLC for both outdoor and indoor track and field, marking the team’s third season of placing.
Victoria Byrd, a senior health and exercise major, has been on the team for four years and enjoyed attending the conference. “My favorite memory was probably, of course, winning the conference. I mean, it’s just an unreal feeling. We won by … about half a point or a point for outdoors. So, we knew it was going to come down to the 4×400, and we knew we had the bag; nobody was beating our 4×400,” Byrd said.
Not only is the team proud of their continuous improvement on personal and group levels, but also of how close they’ve become throughout the year.
“I feel that [the] track [team] is very close. With most sports, some people aren’t as close, but that’s what feels different with our team,” Byrd said. “We’re a very close team because we’re around each other 24/7, we start training in September and compete all the way up until May.”
“We hang out and do everything together. We usually all go sit in the cafeteria with each other after practice and sometimes during lunch. So, I would just say our team chemistry is what makes us different,” Byrd said.
Lady Demon Track and Field finished a successful 2025 season, leading to multiple SLC titles. The team credits its success to having curated a supportive environment that allows the growth and improvement of each member.
