Club volleyball at Northwestern State University of Louisiana blends competition and fun regardless of a student’s major or classification. Comforting and fun spaces like these attract students to return to the Wellness, Recreation and Activities Center courts for weeks.
The club draws a wide mix of players: former high school athletes, students who grew up playing multiple sports and others who miss the feeling of being part of a team. Members of the team have varying years of experience that allows them to create a natural rhythm on the court. The team strives to play with confidence and put out a welcoming environment.
Peyshance Peek, a junior nursing major in her second year with the club, feels that the club is familiar with a new environment. After playing three sports in high school, she wanted to stay active in college without the pressure of a full varsity schedule. Club volleyball offered the perfect middle ground. “I wanted to continue playing a sport that I love,” Peek said.
Peek said some of her favorite memories come from being a part of the club and playing at the WRAC just for fun. “It’s always a great way to meet new people and have a good time with everyone playing,” Peek said.
Many students on the club team are older or have previously played volleyball. She said that the club was a great opportunity to meet so many people and connect with others who have the same interests. “There is good teamwork and a good sense of community,” Peek said.
For NSU students balancing academics, jobs and campus life, club volleyball can be a great way to relax and relieve stress. Whether competing in matches or laughing during a game, the team is open to all students interested in having fun and getting exercise.
