After suffering several losses, one thing that persists for the Lady Demon Basketball team is the dedication and hard work players put in. Week after week, they continue competing with high spirits, win or lose.
One of these players is business administration major Victoria Miller.
Although only a sophomore, Miller is no weak link. Assistant Sports Information Director Jason Pugh said Miller is one of the most consistent players on the team – a statement proven true by her game statistics.
According to NSU Athletics, this season alone, Miller has scored an average of 4.5 points per game and has an average of 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.
The successful forward and center says she has been playing basketball for as long as she can remember; this love allowed her to continue playing in high school and earn a scholarship to play for NSU.
Among the things she loves most about playing for NSU are the support from the fans and team and “the feeling” while on the court.
In January 2017, Miller suffered an injury – a dislocated shoulder – that rendered her unable to finish last year’s season.
“Not being able to participate was challenging,” she says. “I hated not being able to be with my team, but I didn’t let that discourage me. I just kept putting in hard work where I could and waiting to be able to play again.”
This year, Miller says she is more confident and vocal.
“Even though this has been a tough season for the team, I really think we can still come together and turn things around. We’re not lacking for talent.”
Things aren’t always so serious for the Lady Demons, though. Whenever they have a free moment, Miller says they like to joke around and make fun of each other – in a positive way, of course.
“We’re really just a big family when it comes down to it,” she says.
The team can fight its way into the Southland Conference Tournament, but their current 12th-place rank will make it tough to make the cut with seven games remaining.
Approaching the end season play, the Lady Demons will face the Lamar Cardinals Feb. 7, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Feb. 10 and the Houston Baptist Huskies Feb. 14 before returning to the home court Feb. 21 to play the University of Incarnate Word Cardinals.
