Pi Kappa Phi is a fraternity at Northwestern State University dedicated to leadership and service. The organization participates in philanthropy and community service initiatives throughout the year, and members are involved in fundraising efforts and service projects both on and off campus.
One of the fraternity’s main focuses is its philanthropy. Spencer Bowden, a junior accounting major and president of Pi Kappa Phi, discussed the goals and accomplishments of Pi Kappa Phi so far this year. “Our philanthropy, The Ability Experience, is our own in-house philanthropy. All the money we raise goes to helping children and adults with disabilities,” Bowden said.
“What I believe makes us different from most is that we are the only fraternity in the country to have an in-house philanthropy. So, amongst our members, this year alone, we were able to raise over $4,500, which is the most we’ve ever raised in the last six years,” Bowden said.
Members also participate in service projects that involve direct interaction with the community. K.C. Thompson, a sophomore communication major and active member of Pi Kappa Phi, described a recent service project. “We’ve done a couple of things this semester that have really brought community impact to a personal level,” Thompson said. “This semester, we went out to a couple of places and built wheelchair ramps for different families who are in need. Overall, that was a very fun and eye-opening experience.”
Leadership development is another aspect emphasized in Pi Kappa Phi. Landon Barrett, a junior industrial engineering major and active member, explained his outlook on leadership in Pi Kappa Phi. “To me, leadership means a lot of things. But mostly, I think it means putting yourself forward. Whether that is taking up a role that no one else will take or putting yourself in a position to have people looking to you, we task ourselves with doing the things that others may overlook,” Barrett said.
Pi Kappa Phi allows its members to be heavily involved in the community and on campus. This contributes to the personal growth of its members and creates a significant impact at NSU for Pi Kappa Phi.
