Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated is a Greek organization rooted in history, service and excellence. Founded on Nov. 17, 1911, at Howard University, Omega Psi Phi became the first international fraternity established on the campus of a historically Black college.
Its motto, “Friendship is essential to the soul,” and its four cardinal principles—Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift—continue to guide members more than a century later. Today, Omega Psi Phi boasts over 750 chapters worldwide and more than 250,000 members, all committed to leadership and community service.
At Northwestern State University, the fraternity’s Theta Delta chapter represents this tradition. Chartered in the fall of 1971, Theta Delta was founded under the guidance of Rev. Brother G. Stanley Lewis, marking a historic moment for NSU as one of the first NPHC fraternities on campus. From its earliest days, the chapter stood for inclusion and progress, creating opportunities for leadership and representation in a time of change.
For more than five decades, Omega Psi Phi has been deeply involved in service. The chapter has organized sickle cell awareness campaigns, supported local childcare centers and partnered with community organizations to address critical needs in Natchitoches and surrounding areas.
These efforts embody the principle of Uplift, ensuring that the fraternity’s impact extends far beyond campus. Alumni continue this tradition, returning for homecoming events, mentoring current members and reinforcing the bonds of brotherhood that define Omega Psi Phi.
As part of NSU’s Greek life community, Omega Psi Phi upholds high standards of integrity and leadership. The fraternity adheres to strict anti-hazing policies and structured intake processes, ensuring that membership reflects both academic achievement and personal character. Through programs, service projects and campus involvement, the fraternity demonstrates what it means to lead with purpose.
Omega Psi Phi is a legacy, and at NSU, that legacy lives through Theta Delta’s commitment to excellence, service and brotherhood. From its founding in 1971 to its continued presence today, the chapter stands as a testament to the power of friendship, perseverance and leadership. Omega Psi Phi remains a vital part of the Demon family, inspiring students to rise and uplift their communities.
