Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council at Northwestern State University. The sorority focuses on college education as a tool to guide members into public service, with a primary focus on the Black community.
Mya Williams, a senior criminal justice major and the vice president of Delta Sigma Theta, enjoys how everyone comes together within the sorority for a common purpose. “When it comes to event planning, we have a lot of like-minded people who each bring something different. We can all come together, share our opinions and still respect each other’s paths. We all have the same goal, but the different perspectives create something amazing,” Williams said.
Williams looks forward to continuing the path created by Delta’s founders. “They strived to create a path for us when there wasn’t something for us as Blacks. So out of that came this amazing organization focused on serving our community and the support of sisters who just do more for their community,” Williams said.
Throughout the year, Delta Sigma Theta hosts Dunk-a-Delta, the Mr. Crimson and Cream Pageant and a voter registration awareness event.
McKenzie Guilbeau, a senior nursing major and the president of Delta Sigma Theta, has a passion for bringing awareness to her communities. “I love pouring back into people and communities that have poured into me,” Guilbeau said. “My favorite thing is hosting events and bringing awareness to things like sickle cell, voter registration or educating college students in something like money management.”
Guilbeau stated that since many Deltas are graduating this year, they are trying to make as many memories as possible. “I’m excited that I get to pass the torch this year to one of my sisters, and I’m hopeful to see my chapter grow and add new positions that we haven’t had the chance to fill,” Guilbeau said.
Kabreyha Harris is a junior nursing major and treasurer of Delta Sigma Theta. Harris’s favorite event of the year is Delta Week, as she enjoys connecting with others through serving the community around her.
“The week is dedicated for us to host awareness and social events. We’re with each other every day doing all these sorts of things, and that’s what makes it so fun,” Harris said. “Being with everybody and getting to show everyone who we are and what we do is amazing.”
Harris stated that she always saw Delta members around campus and appreciated how they went about business. “I just wanted to be surrounded by a group of women who exude positivity and kindness because for me, being a Delta means to be a hard worker, to be kind and caring no matter what, to be understanding and to always have someone’s back,” Harris said.
Delta Sigma Theta is a group that seeks to bring awareness to a plethora of causes both on campus and within the Natchitoches community. Their service initiatives create an environment where members can make a difference while strengthening their sisterhood.
