Northwestern State University of Louisiana students in the Department of Theatre and Dance performed their first showing of “Antigone” by Sophokles, presented in a new version by Anne Carson, on Sept. 27, 2023.

Premiering in Theatre West, the black box is set with ancient Greek columns surrounded by rubble and ash on the floor. Hanging from the back wall sets a hypostyle hall, seemingly destroyed and falling apart.

The set is catered in such a way that the actors have the ability to maneuver around the set while also being able to interact and use the columns as a seat or resting spot for items that need to be displayed. The true character of the set helps bring the audience in for a taste of what’s to come.

Sophokles “Antigone” is a drama-filled comedy which features civil disobedience, morality, loyalty and authority all wrapped together into one play. With its powerful message and beautiful storytelling done by NSU students, the show may just be worth your time.

Three cast members really stuck out in the production of “Antigone.” Damari Padilla, Logan Dupuy and the well-respected Scott Burrell. All three delivered an incredible performance, alongside everyone else in the cast, that kept the audience wanting more.

Damari Padilla, cast as the Guard, delivered a sassy portrayal that had the audience laughing with, and at him which led to him getting a well-deserved applause during his bow.

Logan Dupuy, portraying the Chorus, was a delight to see on stage. Making her way through a projection to chime in on the story. Funny yet knowledgeable, Dupuy delivered a performance that was liked by many in the audience and kept them wanting more.

Scott Burell, director of the Dear School of the Creative and Performing Arts and professor of theatre, joined the cast to portray the demanding ruler Kreon. Burrell gives an outstanding performance that had the audience engaged with his character from beginning to end.

The cast and crew gave an absolutely outstanding performance like no other, showing true emotions and bringing a powerful story to life, along with a great modern twist.
